About this place
Though it calls itself a wine bar, Ryuchan in Kashiwacho, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto, is also a place to enjoy a proper meal. Diners describe ordering pasta as the main event, or choosing a glass of wine to go with a few starters. Among the dishes that have made an impression are potato salad with anchovies, topped with smoked oil sardines, and buffalo mozzarella baked with egg. Start with a few small plates alongside wine, then finish with pasta. One diner appreciated being able to choose a pasta shape to suit the sauce, making it possible to put together a meal to your taste.
The recorded menu also includes lamb fillet tagliata seasoned with cumin and paprika, semi-cooked Japanese flying squid with a sauce made from its liver, and shrimp and mushroom ajillo. With seafood, meat and hot dishes on offer, you can drop in for a drink or build a full dinner from the dishes that catch your eye. Diners note that the wines by the glass include sparkling, white and red, and that the selection may change. One enjoyed a glass of cava; another asked the owner for advice on pairing wine with the food. It is a good setting for starting with one glass and choosing what to drink next as the dishes arrive.
There is counter seating, and the restaurant is described as suitable for solo diners. Ryuchan is on the 2 floor of a building in Kashiwacho, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto. It opens from 17:00 until 0:00 the following day, except on Sundays. Seating is limited, and reservations are accepted, so consider booking if you are planning a relaxed dinner.
